Salon Review: Sloans, Lane Cove

In Beauty Q&A, Colour, Curls, Dry Shampoo, Fringe, Frizz, Glamour, Hair, Hairspray, How To, Industry Insiders, Volume on November 17, 2012 at 6:00 am

By Tammi Ireland

Since moving to Sydney, I’ve been on the hunt for a fantastic hairdresser who can turn my thick, curly hair into a manageable, ‘looks like I didn’t even try’ ‘do. I’d also love for that place to come with some cool staff, a wealth of experience and be in a good location.  Last month, Sloans ticked all the boxes.

.

The salon is located in a quaint street surrounded by cafes and flooded with natural light. The team is fun and a nice mix of classic and contemporary with their own style, making the salon a great fit for families and fashion forwards, alike.

My hair was cut by salon owner and creative director, Scott Sloan.  Scott is also an international creative artist for Schwarzkopf, so he knows his stuff.  He cut my hair into layers underneath, leaving a veil of long hair on top, meaning I didn’t lose length but I did lose a lot of that weight that was keeping me from styling anything other than a ponytail pre-cut.

Capes, Colour, Cuts – Hair Expo 2012 Sunday Recap

In Blunt Fringe, Chanel, Colour, Dry Shampoo, Fringe, Fun, Hair, Hair Expo 2012, Hair Ladders, Head Studio, New, Trend on June 11, 2012 at 11:32 am

By Tammi Ireland

Sydney’s Convention and Exhibition Centre was a swarm of midriff tops, bunt fringes, coloured hair and new heights yesterday as the Australian Hair Expo entered its second day of showcasing the best of hair salons to industry professionals.  Starting at 10am with entry and a quick run through the area and ending with a phenomenal finale at the Next Gen Gala, Coveted Canvas was there to see all of Sunday’s events – and garner some pretty strong inspiration for trends and tricks in hair.

.

At 10.10am, my old (and favourite) hair dressers, Head Studio from King Street in Perth, hit the Hair Expo main stage to showcase their solo presentation – Forever Young. The show was all about saying a big ‘F-you’ to conventional, corporate society and having fun with your youth.  There was colour, blunt fringes, hair wraps and hair ladders, used to create looks for editorial shoots that would have those in the know stopping at the image and saying – I want what they’ve got! The elixir of youth? It’s in Head Studio-esque, Forever Young hair.

Trend to Try: Plum Eyeliner

In Colour, Eyes, Face, Weather, Women on May 13, 2012 at 1:31 pm

By Tammi Ireland

With cooler weather comes a longing for something different in the makeup department; something a little… spicy.  I’ve often turned to a burgundy lip (as seen at the recent Met Gala) when the mercury has dropped, but this season it’s time to let the eyes take the spotlight. Introducing my new winter makeup obsession – the plum eyeliner.

.

Used exactly as you would a black kohl liner, the plum look gives an alternative from the predictable black line.  Best of all – it’s suitable for all skin types.  In the photo above, I’ve used Estee Lauder Pure Colour Intense Kajal EyeLiner in ‘Blackened Plum’, on my top and bottom waterline, as well as along the top lashline on my lid.  Using my finger to help melt the waxy pencil texture, I’ve smudged it lightly for a worn-in feel.  The Estee Lauder liner goes on a dream, and is my pick for best Plum Eyeliner on the market.  It has a blue-black look, which was piercing against my pale skin and deep brown eyes.  I wore it with a sweep of Tom Ford Cheek Color in ‘Savage’ and Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara in ‘Black’ only.  Let the eyes do the talking.

Q&A with Nice’n Easy Colour Expert, plus Colour Blend Foam Review

In Affordable, Colour, Guest, Hair, How To, Interview, New, New Release, News, Sexy, Shampoo & Conditioner, Tested, Women on April 13, 2012 at 6:00 am

When I dyed my hair back to its natural brown after years of balayage last December, to say I felt neutral about the results is an understatement. I was Switzerland.  What I wanted – although I didn’t know it until I dyed my hair last fortnight – was a deep brown, sexy, solid colour.  Balayage was over in my book, and I wanted to look smouldering – Angelina Jolie/Anne Hathaway style.

Thankfully, that’s when I got the opportunity to chat with Clairol Nice’n Easy’s colour expert Belinda Jeffrey, as well as a shot to try out the new Clairol Nice’n Easy Colour Blend Foam in ’4 Dark Brown’.

First – the hair:

London Fashion Week: Summer’s Here To Stay!

In Colour, Fashion Week, Hair, House of Ernest, London on March 8, 2012 at 6:00 am

By Nakia McDonald from House of Ernest

Jean Paul Gaultier

Can I have a scoop of Bluebell Madonna and Tangerine Queen? The summer’s biggest trend, eye popping candy colours, are still the rage.

With his luxury collection and haulte couture show in Paris, Jean-Paul Gaultier created a Amy Whinehouse-inspired style, perfecto jackets, pencil skirts, corsets, ruffled petticoats and topped with high, beau fort teased hair and colours of candy.

How House of Ernest interpreted the trend this season

Candy coloured hues have been the talk of the season. Using coloured sprays for a one night look or a more permanent colour for more adventurous clients, House of Ernest thinks anyone can have fun with this trend.  I first developed this look for the fun-loving and child-at-heart clients, and we’re thrilled it’s here to stay. Yay, Christmas is just days away.  Eating with the family, drinking with friends, and being merry all weekend, we can’t wait here in the Coveted Canvas office!  What are you doing for Christmas?

Whichever way you celebrate, the key for your makeup is to keep it simple. You don’t want to be running to the bathroom to check your foundation or fix your lippy in between the prawn cocktail entree and turkey main.  The key is a little in the prep, a lot in the application.  Here’s the look we’re aiming for this year…

Ladies, you have to agree with me there is nothing better than feeling sexy, confident and beautiful – just for you.  But how do you get that way if you’ve worked three different deadlines in a row, felt sick from lunch and been told some horrible news?  You schedule it!  Just like your dentist appointment or meeting your superiors, this is important, too.  Once a week is all I ask, and I’ll explain why it’s so great right now…

Tonight was my ‘Beauty Night’.  I try to schedule one a week or – failing that – one a fortnight.  On ‘Beauty Night’ everything gets done. And I mean everything.  Here’s my ‘To Do’ list…

.

Obviously there’s no way I could (nor should) do all these on a daily basis, so scheduling one night a week to check everything off the list is not only a great idea, but also something to look forward to.  Because you feel AMAZING afterwards.

.

It’s all in the products you use – ‘Beauty Night’ is not the night to skimp on products. On ‘Beauty Night’ it’s the best of the best.  Here are my must haves, working down the ‘To Do’ list: Read the rest of this entry »

Everyday Essentials: Taupe Eye Shadow

In Colour, Everyday Essentials, Eyes on May 10, 2011 at 9:36 am

By Tammi Ireland

When I’m busy at work, I find it easy to slip into a beauty routine that shaves minutes off my departure but miles off my sex appeal.  Instead of brushing and running a ghd through my locks, I twist them up into a chignon.  Instead of glowing bronzer, I simply mix some illuminating moisturiser into my foundation.  And instead of colouring my eyes in delicious taupe eye shadow, lined with chocolate liner, I slick on some mascara and run out the door.  Fast, yes.  Less than impressive, also.

.

Yesterday, when I woke thirty minutes earlier than usual, I decided enough was enough.  While it wasn’t long enough to turn my Curly Sue-bob into a sleek lob, I did take the time to blend some bronze colour onto my lids.  HUGE difference (and it really only took 30 seconds)!  Thus, I dub thee taupe eye shadow an ‘Everyday Essential’.

Here are my favourite shades: Read the rest of this entry »
