Alter Ego: Anja with Illamasqua ‘Human Fundamentalism’

Illamasqua’s latest range, Human Fundamentalism, is fun. Really, truly fun!  The idea with Illamasqua products is that you create your alter ego, and with a focus on white and bright skin in Human Fundamentalism, what better alter ego to use as a muse than the white and bright Anja Konstantinova?  Using the photo above, this is how I interpreted Illamasqua’s Human Fundamentalism -

.

How I Started: Fresh faced, with clean hair and not a scerrick of makeup.

.

Conceal: With Estee Lauder’s Disappear in ’02 – Light’, I concealed any possible dark areas, including around the mouth, under the eyes and the nose crease. Read the rest of this entry »

How Bloom Made Me Love Glitter

In Fun Stuff, Hands, Nails, Party time on March 28, 2012 at 6:00 am

By Tammi Ireland

I’ve never loved glitter.  I wasn’t the girl to wear it on her eyes during high school, I never wear sequined clothing, and I never, ever wore glitter top coats on my nails.  I remember trying once while at a sleepover and then begging my mum to help me remove the ‘tacky’ polish that kept getting caught on my woollen jumper at the time.  It was rough, technicoloured, and felt horrid.  And so I refused to put glitter on my nails again.

However, I’ve since fallen in love with technicoloured photos of our galaxy.  I’ve fallen for a gold glittery Ellery number.  And I adored the glitter hair at last season’s MYER preview.  So, when I was offered Bloom Cosmetics’ Glamorous Sparkle Top Coat in Gold (RRP $19.95) to trial, I thought I’d give it a go.  Thank God, I did.

.

This glitter top coat is so far from the ones of my Year 8 hey-day that I’ve already re-applied it three times.  A nice gold colour (read: not garish), the key to Bloom’s adult look with the sparkle top coat is in the different sizes of glitter particles.  There are regular, hexagonally-cut glitters and then there are very fine glitter pieces.  The result, when coated over Bloom Nail Polish in Lucy II was astounding.  A gorgeous result that I just kept getting compliments on (11 at last take!)   Read the rest of this entry »

New Year’s Resolutions

In Everyday, Fun Stuff, Glamour, Hair, How To, Industry Insiders, Inspiration, Natural, Organic, Party time, Resolutions, Sun, Wellbeing, Women on January 2, 2012 at 6:00 am

Happy New Year, beauties! Another year gone and it’s time to reflect on what we want for 2012.  Hopefully you’ll all have nursed your New Year’s Eve hangovers away by now and have a pen handy because it’s time to make our New Year’s Resolutions.

.

Some people I know don’t believe in resolutions, saying they only lead to guilt and disappointment when you can’t check them off at the end of the year.  However, I think having goals are a great way to ensure you stay focussed on what was once – at a moment of downtime – important to you.   Read the rest of this entry »

Christmas Make-Up

Yay, Christmas is just days away.  Eating with the family, drinking with friends, and being merry all weekend, we can’t wait here in the Coveted Canvas office!  What are you doing for Christmas?

Whichever way you celebrate, the key for your makeup is to keep it simple. You don’t want to be running to the bathroom to check your foundation or fix your lippy in between the prawn cocktail entree and turkey main.  The key is a little in the prep, a lot in the application.  Here’s the look we’re aiming for this year…

DIY: Natural Skincare

In Acne, Affordable, Bath, Fun Stuff, Hands, Health, How To, Marian Rubock on May 17, 2011 at 6:00 am

By Marian Rubock

As mentioned in earlier articles, your skin is the largest organ in the body. To put this in perspective, the skin of an average adult weighs approximately seven kilograms. It is vital to the structure of our body and it is important to make sure we nurture and nourish our skin.

Maintaining a good skin care regime is essential for healthy skin and assists in reversing the ageing process. Medical grade products or cosmeceuticals have a number of benefits in comparison to over-the-counter skin care products as they are designed to affect not only your top layer of skin but also the deeper layers. As we age it is the deeper layers that thin and therefore using skin care that treat these areas is a must for healthy skin.

Get back to nature.

When selecting anti-ageing skin care, it is vital to bear in mind that products containing all natural ingredients will reduce toxins in the body. Continual use of products that are petroleum based (i.e. sorbelene), or high in chemicals are detrimental to the condition of your skin and will leave pH levels unbalanced whilst also affecting its quality and appearance. Although these products may provide temporary improvement, they will ultimately age your skin usually through dehydration. Read the rest of this entry »

Easter Alternatives

In Affordable, Fun Stuff, How To, Wellbeing on April 21, 2011 at 6:00 am

Everyone loves chocolate (well, everyone worth knowing anyway), but unfortunately chocolate doesn’t like us.  When Easter time rolls around every year, those of us who haven’t quite mastered the act of moderation often find ourselves in a bunny coma, with a skin and head that feels disgusting.  This year, I’m boycotting!

.

‘But how will you avoid all that chocolatey goodness come Good Friday, Tammi?’

Well, convenient imaginary question asker, I don’t plan to avoid – I plan to embrace!

Instead of eating the chocolate eggs, I plan to use all kinds of festive Easter-ish products to create that holiday feel.  Cocoa-scented moisturisers, deep chocolate eyeshadows, and soft-as-a-bunny cotton pads – YES!  And each will be tailored to the mood of the moment…

So, the end is near.  2010 has been a helluva year and as it comes to a close, we’re all making final arrangements on how to bid adieu in style.  Personally, I’m celebrating with a low-key house party.  And what will I be slapping on my face come 5pm tomorrow?  I’ve got a few options to share with you…

HOORAH!

There are a bunch of ways you can look smokin’ hot during the final hours of 2010, and they all involve preparation.  Be sure to tick (fake) tanning, moisturising, hair removal and priming off your list before you even look at that foundation.

Get Her Look: SAMANTHA | Sex and the City 2 – the Movie

In Celebs, Colour, Complexion, Events, Everyday, Eyes, Face, Fashion, Fun Stuff, Glamour, Legs, Lips, Makeup, Mascara, Movies, Organic, SATC, SJP, Skin Care, Tested on November 23, 2010 at 6:00 am

After yesterday’s post on how to get Carrie Bradshaw’s amazing Abu Dhabi look, I’m hoping you’re all feeling inspired to try out the power woman look that Samantha Jones rocks so well!

.

Sam’s look didn’t change a whole lot from the first Sex and the City movie to the second.  Her hair is longer and more free and she rocked a bit more of a red lip.  Power woman all the way.  I love the way Sam works and her ‘I’m right’ attitude.  She rocks the ‘I am woman, hear me roar’ feel.

Let’s first look at her lipstick  As I said, Sam’s rocking the red lip more in the second movie.  I like Face of Australia Lip Quench Lipstick (RRP $9.49) for its staying power.

Get Her Look: CARRIE | Sex and the City 2 – the Movie

In Blush, Bronzer, Celebs, Colour, Events, Everyday, Eyes, Face, Fashion, Fragrance, Fun Stuff, Gifts, How To, Lips, Lipstick, Makeup, Movies, Nails, Primer, SATC, Scent, SJP on November 22, 2010 at 6:00 am

Growing up, I would watch Sex and the City religiously.  Often out of the eyes of my parents, I’d watch Carrie date countless men, muse on her relationships and write about them in her column.  I’d admire Miranda’s work ethic and Samantha’s no-holds-barred attitude, and I’d love Charlotte’s determination for the picture perfect romance.  I learnt a lot from those four friends, be it that clashing prints work, that I want to be a writer, that friendship is one of the strongest bonds you will find in life or that romance – any and every type – is just fabulous.

SATC the TV series.

When the first movie came out, I was beyond thrilled.  I hated it in cinemas but loved it during the re-watch.  The second movie was cheesy, a full romp.  But the fashion was wonderful and the friendship stronger than ever.

SATC the Movie.

What I most loved in SATC2 was the makeup.  The girls had each changed just a little.  Samantha was rocking a powerful red lip, Miranda had a more relaxed attitude thanks to the fact she quit her job, Charlotte was mostly the same, save for a bit more pink (influenced by her girls?) and Carrie – with the biggest noticeable change – had a more tanned, bronzed makeup.

Throughout the week we’ll be showing you how how you can use their makeup progression for inspiration.  First, the star of the show, Carrie Bradshaw…
