The Best Beauty Tip I Learned Last Year

In Complexion, Concealer, Everyday, Eyes, Face, How To, Illuminator, Industry Insiders, Red Carpet, Supermarkets on January 16, 2012 at 6:00 am

By Tammi Ireland

Last year was a huge year for Coveted Canvas.  We increased our Facebook followers by hundreds as more and more beauty lovers joined the conversation.  We won an award from beautyheaven for our blog post on epilating.  We made friends from blogs in Australia and overseas.  And we grew the Coveted Canvas community in Western Australia, where it all began. But what you may not know is I’m learning as the site grows and grows, and it’s only fair for me to pass on my knowledge to Coveted Canvas’ loyal readers – it’s why I started the site after all.

So, without further ado, here’s the top beauty tip I learned in 2011…

.

As with most of the Aussie beauty industry’s great hunks of knowledge, the tip came from our country’s star beauty writer Zoë Foster (who now writes over at our favourite current affairs site, Mamamia).   Read the rest of this entry »

Christmas Make-Up

Yay, Christmas is just days away.  Eating with the family, drinking with friends, and being merry all weekend, we can’t wait here in the Coveted Canvas office!  What are you doing for Christmas?

Whichever way you celebrate, the key for your makeup is to keep it simple. You don’t want to be running to the bathroom to check your foundation or fix your lippy in between the prawn cocktail entree and turkey main.  The key is a little in the prep, a lot in the application.  Here’s the look we’re aiming for this year…

The search for the perfect summer tan is high on the lists of many as summer draws near. But if there is one thing you can count on, it is that sun savvy women wont be baking on the beaches or hitting up the sun bed in their quest for the perfect glow – a flawless fake tan is the best way to safely shimmer this summer!

The tan experts at Australian tanning company Bonza Bronz  give us some tricks and ticks to ensuring your summer fake tan is streak free and fabulous!

THE PRE TAN PLAN: suitable for both salon spray tans or at home fake tans

The perfect tan requires pre-planning and a little extra attention to the body’s key no-tan zones. To ensure a streak free tan, exfoliate and shave two days prior to your tan. A smooth bod free of oils, dirt and dry skin is the best way to guarantee a flawless result.

Try Bonza Bronz Bronz Polish, the perfect prep product for a spray tan or fabulous home fakie. And don’t forget: concentrate on areas such as knees, feet, elbows and ankles as these are the most problematic areas that like to drink up fake tan. Read the rest of this entry »

We Love Lucy

In Bronzer, Colour, Complexion, Curls, Hair, Illuminator, Lips, Nails on February 11, 2011 at 6:00 am

Trawling fashion and beauty blogs throughout the day is part of my job (isn’t it!?) so I always get a little thrill when I come across a particularly inspiring one.  The latest lady to win blog kudos from me is Lucy Laucht. Her outfits are sleek, classic and fun, plus her filler tan and barrel curls make for one envious beauty editor.

It’s the red nails that set off that tan, plus the sandy, light blonde hair that looks as though it comes naturally but wouldn’t be hard to achieve in the salon.  Here’s how you can get the look…

So, the end is near.  2010 has been a helluva year and as it comes to a close, we’re all making final arrangements on how to bid adieu in style.  Personally, I’m celebrating with a low-key house party.  And what will I be slapping on my face come 5pm tomorrow?  I’ve got a few options to share with you…

HOORAH!

There are a bunch of ways you can look smokin’ hot during the final hours of 2010, and they all involve preparation.  Be sure to tick (fake) tanning, moisturising, hair removal and priming off your list before you even look at that foundation.

How to Fake Fresh, Luminous Skin

In Colour, How To, Illuminator, Jemma Kidd, Makeup, Moisturiser, Natural, Party time, Primer, Serum on December 20, 2010 at 6:00 am

There is nothing worse than those days (often Mondays, like today) when you feel off your game.  You feel dull, lifeless and really tired and sometimes you look that way, too.  As luck of the universe would have it, these are the days of your first date/job interview/meet the in-laws/(insert already nerve-wracking event here) and the last thing you need is a dull complexion. Today, luck is on your side, as I’ve compiled a quick list of the best ways to get a sparkling, luminous complexion that will trick strangers into thinking you’re a supermodel.

You could look like this...

Step 1 – Prep.

As with any killer makeup, it’s important to prep your skin to look amazing.  The best way to be on your way to bright skin is to slough away all the dead skin you already have.

Tinted Moisturiser Test: Jane Iredale

In Colour, Complexion, Everyday, Foundation, Illuminator, Moisturiser, Multitasking, Primer, Skin Care, Sun, Tested, Tinted Moisturiser, UVA, UVB on September 22, 2010 at 6:00 am

This is the first post in what will be semi-consecutive posts welcoming back the return of tinted moisturiser.  While it never truly went anywhere, tinted moisturiser has connotations of sneaky ways to wear makeup to school when you weren’t allowed (“Miss, it’s moisturiser!”) and a go-to when you couldn’t afford or weren’t allowed to buy actual foundation.

Jane Iredale’s version – Dream Tint – has set the bar high in my trial.  The coverage is fabulous and the colour matches perfectly to my skin tone.  Plus, it’s thick and rich and extra moisturising.  I applied it, as suggested in the packet, with a blending brush and a little goes a long way.  Jane Iredale are definitely onto a good thing with Dream Tint!

Hair

There are three ways you can go with your hair for a formal occasion.  You can choose to go trendy, opt for a casual look and let your dress shine, or go all out and make it a formal up-do.  It does depend on the event as to which type of hair style you use, however we’ve gone and selected the best of the three and we’ll tell you how to do them, too.  (Lucky you!)

Trendy: It’s all about Alexander Wang’s side plait.  Imagine this, will you?  You’re in a long, slinky black gown. Your makeup and skin is golden and just dark enough to come across mysterious, yet fun.  Your shoes are sky-high and you’re feeling a million bucks.  But so is every other girl at this thing, because that outfit I just described can often be ‘cookie-cutter’ (read: everyone does it).  Set yourself apart from the pack with a fashion-forward hair do:
