Lessons on Sexuality, with Tom Ford

In Designer, Makeup, Sex, Sexy, Uncategorized, Women on October 14, 2012 at 3:02 pm

Tom Ford is a designer unlike any other. Sleek, sophisticated and damn sexy, he gets it right every time.  Known for his controversial advertising campaigns (which I’ve gratuitously included for you throughout this post), Ford’s latest beauty offering doesn’t deviate – it’s dark, broody and forbidden. The Fall 2012 is for every woman’s alter ego.

Ford says, “This collection lets a woman express her romantic, ingenue side, or her temptress, femme fatale side, with a kind of indulgent, forbidden pleasure.  These colours have a twist of the perverse to them.” The colour story is made of rose, wine and fur (ingenue) or exotic jewel and voluptious fruit shades (temptress).  Of course, the wine and jewel shades are our favourite.

Primary School Memories with Face Of Australia

In Clinique, Everyday Essentials, Lips, Lipstick, Makeup on June 4, 2012 at 6:00 am

By Tammi Ireland

When I think Primary School, I think colouring with wind-ups, fun and hints of colour in my first ever lip balms.  So, it’s no surprise that the new Face of Australia Sheer Gloss Lip Crayons evoke precious Primary School memories when used.

A steal at only RRP$14.95 for the three shades, the Face Of Australia Crayons are a necessity for everyday.  I’ve been wearing ‘Sundae’ (middle) to work every day and have found lips to stay moisturised throughout the morning – quite a feat in the Sydney winter. ‘Macaron’ allows enough of a tint to replace a rose lipstick if moisture is what you’re after.  To state the obvious, the Face Of Australia Crayons are blatant copies of Clinique Chubby Sticks (RRP$35), however the price point and intense moisture can’t be ignored.  If the colour is what you’re after, though, a Clinique Chubby has more staying power. Keep the Crayons for everyday and Chubby for night.

Rae Morris is God-like in the makeup industry. Her experience and brand have grown bigger than many other makeup artists out there, and it’s always a pleasure when we see one of her informative, easy-to-follow How To books hit the shelves.

This year, Timeless Makeup was released.  Inside you’ll find photographs of Australian personalities like Kylie Gillies and Gail Elliot modelling Rae’s best tips for looking and feeling your best.

This book is phenomenal for all ages, and I truly recommend you pick one up for your mum this Mother’s Day.  It goes through all ages, explaining the tips and tricks needed to look youthful at any age.  Other features include eye colour wheels, matching makeup to your hair and an introductory explanation as to how you age.  I’d go as far as to say Timeless Makeup is a must for all women who own any piece of makeup (is this everyone?)

Rae Morris and Allen and Unwin have kindly donated three copies of Timeless Makeup for Coveted Canvas to give away to lucky readers.

To enter, simply email tammi.ireland[at]live.com describing in 25 words or less your favourite makeup trick.  Don’t forget to include your full name and postal address.

Competition ends April 20, 2012 11.54PM AEST.

Yay, Christmas is just days away.  Eating with the family, drinking with friends, and being merry all weekend, we can’t wait here in the Coveted Canvas office!  What are you doing for Christmas?

Whichever way you celebrate, the key for your makeup is to keep it simple. You don’t want to be running to the bathroom to check your foundation or fix your lippy in between the prawn cocktail entree and turkey main.  The key is a little in the prep, a lot in the application.  Here’s the look we’re aiming for this year…

We’ve shown you how to get the hair, now copy the makeup looks that made this season the best season yet (in my book).  Before we get started, I want you to imagine the following, because it’s where I imagine the wearer of these looks to be … Paris, 2011.  It’s rainy and she’s wearing a black coat over a rust-coloured dress, tights and brown boots. She’s wearing layers, meeting the girls for coffee and running errands.  She’s chic.

Makeup for Autumn Winter is all about a dewy, natural complexion, taupe eyes and bright lips.  That’s all you need to know.  End post.

I kid.  But seriously, a red or pink or deep coral lipstick, taupe eyeshadow and a good liquid foundation is all you’ll need to copy the best looks.  Here’s Milly’s version, above and below…

How to Fake Fresh, Luminous Skin

In Colour, How To, Illuminator, Jemma Kidd, Makeup, Moisturiser, Natural, Party time, Primer, Serum on December 20, 2010 at 6:00 am

There is nothing worse than those days (often Mondays, like today) when you feel off your game.  You feel dull, lifeless and really tired and sometimes you look that way, too.  As luck of the universe would have it, these are the days of your first date/job interview/meet the in-laws/(insert already nerve-wracking event here) and the last thing you need is a dull complexion. Today, luck is on your side, as I’ve compiled a quick list of the best ways to get a sparkling, luminous complexion that will trick strangers into thinking you’re a supermodel.

You could look like this...

Step 1 – Prep.

As with any killer makeup, it’s important to prep your skin to look amazing.  The best way to be on your way to bright skin is to slough away all the dead skin you already have.
