Capes, Colour, Cuts – Hair Expo 2012 Sunday Recap

Sydney’s Convention and Exhibition Centre was a swarm of midriff tops, bunt fringes, coloured hair and new heights yesterday as the Australian Hair Expo entered its second day of showcasing the best of hair salons to industry professionals.  Starting at 10am with entry and a quick run through the area and ending with a phenomenal finale at the Next Gen Gala, Coveted Canvas was there to see all of Sunday’s events – and garner some pretty strong inspiration for trends and tricks in hair.

At 10.10am, my old (and favourite) hair dressers, Head Studio from King Street in Perth, hit the Hair Expo main stage to showcase their solo presentation – Forever Young. The show was all about saying a big ‘F-you’ to conventional, corporate society and having fun with your youth.  There was colour, blunt fringes, hair wraps and hair ladders, used to create looks for editorial shoots that would have those in the know stopping at the image and saying – I want what they’ve got! The elixir of youth? It’s in Head Studio-esque, Forever Young hair.

Yummy Smelling Lips for Spring

There’s something about this gorgeous Rouge Dior lipstick when I open it.  It doesn’t smell like lipstick.  It smells like … flowers. A bouquet of beautiful, expensive flowers.  Wow.

Yep, and the lipstick continues to smell like that the whole night through.  I’m loving it so much that I catch myself lifting my top lip to my nose for a little whiff.  Not exactly lady-like but by golly, it is beautiful!

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week!

Our Melbourne contributor Jo Davy went to Melbourne Spring Fashion Week‘s Designer Series 3 and has this to say about spring hair and makeup trends…

Feeling all kinds of fashion-forward and channelling Olivia Palermo’s tousled waves, I took myself off to one of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week fabulous designer shows.  There’s little more to be said for the clothes than ‘I fell in love with all of it, but can afford less than none of it’, but what I did notice was some searing new beauty trends, sashaying down the runway.

Before the show started, I managed to scamper into the VIP beauty room, and grab some face time with the stylists from Kevin Murphy and Napoleon Perdis teams that designed hair and makeup for the show.  In the midst of a lightning fast mini-makeover, they shared with me some tips about recreating the runway look at home, and because I’m such a generous person, I’ll tell you everything I know.

Oh Blue, How We Still Love You!

So the blue nail trend has been around for a while now but every time I see it on the ends of a celeb’s finger I get a little bit happier.  The trend is so summery and so fabulous for those who usually stick to reds, browns and pinks to wear because of its pastel ease.  As we enter Spring this season, I can’t wait to bust out the powder blue polish on my short square nails and watch the sky reflect the colour (yes, it works in that order.  And yes, I said “bust out”).

Need more proof the blue trend is here to stay?  The girls from The Hills are loving it to bits! See exhibit A and B below…

Colour My Lines!

I love, love, love winged eyeliner.  It’s just so hot on any woman at any time of the day.  You can extend the line at night for some extra va-va-voom or just wear it to the outer corner of your eye during the day.  The thing is, CCs, I cannot use a liquid eyeliner pen for the life of me.  No siree!

That’s why I was thrilled when I discovered Clinique‘s Brush-on Cream Liner in True Black.  It’s a little pot of highly-pigmented colour in a gel/cream form that you dip your (supplied) brush into and scribble over yourself however you like.  And if your brush goes dry there’s no need to buy a new one like you do with liquid eyeliners.  Nope, just pop that beauty back into the pot and we’re away again.

Whipped Creme – not just for the bedroom!

I have had a love-hate relationship with my curls since the day I was born. I remember going to primary school and brushing over and over my blunt fringe to make it straight instead of curly, only resulting in an oily fringe and a confused child.  On the other hand, I remember going to dance classes and being amazed at how my hair curled so easily and stayed so tight while the other girls’ mothers used rags, bendy sticks, velcro curls and the like to make their straight daughters’ hair curly, only to have it fall limp mid-routine.

As an adult I used to fight tooth and nail with countless hair straighteners before finally discovering my beloved ghd.  That is a relationship that will stand the test of time.  On the odd days I couldn’t be bothered giving my loving ghd the time of day, I marvelled at how many people commented on my curly hair.  I hated it, why did they love it?

SATC2 + SJP = Curls, Curls, Curls!

Looking back through the Sex and the City series in prep for the movie (isn’t everyone doing that?), I couldn’t help but wonder how many curly hair styles Sarah Jessica Parker has to match her Manolos? Endless hair styles, changing throughout seasons, most making use of her naturally curly hair.

As the premier and stills of the second movie hit press, we notice SJP is adding more curl to her CV.  In the 80s flashback, her hair is uber curled, then regular tousling sees her in her sexy, coveted, every day hair.

Bondi Bronze

Walking the Bondi to Bronte walk this morning, I noticed the reflection of the sunlight off the water was rivalled by the shimmering bronze bodies running, jogging, walking, squatting, side-stepping and swimming along the gorgeous beaches.  They were tan, tone and terrific.  They were also exposed to the sun.

To avoid turning 50 and discovering you look like a prune, look older than you are and have skin cancer, you simply must slip, slop, slap!  Hot bodies are only lukewarm when wrapped in leathery skin and surgery scars.  So, to still look amazing and be protected while running on the white sand, here’s my list of favourite Bondi-ready products.
