Fake It: Winter Blush

In Blush, Complexion, NSW, Skin Care, Weather, Western Australia on June 10, 2011 at 11:33 am

By Tammi Ireland

The seasons have ticked over and Australia is finally feeling the cold nip of winter.  The fresh breeze that comes when you open your front door to stroll toward your workday is a better pick-me-up than any double shot skim latte.  But unfortunately some cities are feeling a little more refreshed than others.

Brrr.

Last weekend, I wandered the streets of Sydney with a close friend, rugged up in layer upon layer of of coats, scarves, tights and boots.  Ducking in to cafes for a quick liquid warm-up (coffee, cab sav, Baileys, tea … anything goes when you’re on holidays!), I’d often catch sight of my face in the cafe windows and admire the natural blush that comes when your nose is so cold and your eyes have been watering as you walk.  Never could I emulate that look in the significantly less nippy Perth.  Until now.

While in my favourite city Sydney, I picked up a delightful blush that gives me that fresh, ‘I’ve-just-been-sitting-outside-in-the-garden-wrapped-in-wool-drinking-hot-cocoa-and-snuggling-with-my-boyfriend’ look. Read the rest of this entry »

Hot Hair in Cool Weather

In Ali Sims, Hair, How To, Weather on March 31, 2011 at 6:00 am

While I’m a huge fan of the top knot (a little height is always nice, just ask Snooki!), it is always good to change up your style with a slightly looser, less-likely-to-cause-a-headache hairstyle. With winter up and coming, softer, more romantic hairstyles are trending and harsh up dos are slowly becoming a distant summer fling.

First there were ‘messy buns’, the hairstyle that took about half an hour trying to perfect to look like it had only taken 2 minutes (I can vaguely understand how men are somewhat confused by women).

Now I would like to introduce to you the latest – ‘messy braids’. Luckily, if you are familiar with the art of braiding, there are no hidden agendas behind this latest trend. A messy braid is simply a messy braid. If you do not know how to braid, lucky you! I’m guessing your first attempt will not be perfect and therein you have already perfected this gorgeous hairstyle. Beginners luck, really!

My favourite of all the messy braids – it screams (or should I say whispers) romance, winter, knits and hot chocolate.

Begin by dividing the middle front section of your hair into three parts. Instead of going straight down the back of your head (toward the nape of your neck) as you would a normal braid, pull the three parts of hair to right side of your head. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Australia Day!

In Weather, Western Australia, Women on January 26, 2011 at 6:00 am

Happy Australia Day! I hope wherever you are in the world (be it in our great country or off travelling others with your heart set at home) you’re enjoying the day, smothering your toast with Vegemite, sinking a few beers, throwing prawns on the barbie and eating lamingtons – all that cliche stuff that we really do hold close to our heart.

What does ‘beauty’ mean in Australia?  This is what…

Friends and the beach.

Beautiful sunsets, no matter where in the country you are.

Paint the Town Pastel!

In Colour, Nails, Tan, Weather on January 6, 2011 at 6:00 am

Summer means sun, sand and surf, which in turn mean tans.  When the weather heats up, it’s the perfect time for our nail polish colours to cool down. Pastel colours look hot on tanned fingers!

The three hottest pastel colours to look out for are pink, coral and lilac.  All of them scream summer gelato.

Yum!

My pic for the best three polishes are these babies…

No Tan Jan (or why you should stay out of the sun next month)

In Charity, Colour, Hair, Hands, Sun, Tan, UVA, UVB, Weather, Western Australia on December 16, 2010 at 6:00 am

Those of you who follow Coveted Canvas on Facebook and on Twitter will know by now that I’ve registered myself – and a Coveted Canvas team – for No Tan Jan.  An initiative from the Warwick Foundation, No Tan Jan sees good-hearted people everywhere register to stay out of the sun and raise money for young adults (18-40 years) with cancer. The idea is that you stay out of the sun in January and find your Aussie glow somewhere else.  Faking your tan, keeping your smooth, youthful skin and raising money for those in need?  I say hell yeah!

Donating to charity makes you feel good.

I’m welcoming any Coveted Canvas readers to join our team.  If you’d like to do so, click here.  Alternatively, if you just want to sponsor me on my mission to get the glow without the leathery side-effects, click here.

Now, because I live in Australia and it’s summer, I am fully aware it’s going to be difficult to stay out of the sun.

Full-bodied, Sexy Summer Hair

In Affordable, Hair, Hairspray, Volume, Weather on December 15, 2010 at 6:00 am

With hot weather comes heat and surf damage to our hair.  For those days when my hair’s feeling just a little too dry or dirty, I like to use a conditioning spray to give it that healthy feel once more. As you know, I love a multi-tasking product, so when I found out about KMS California’s add volume Body Build Detangler, I was simply soaked in delight!

Perfection in a sweet little bottle.

This baby smells like a fresh Christmas morning, with its cinnamon tendancies.  After showering, I sprayed some into my towel-dried hair and blow dried it a little straight.  When I first spritzed it into my hair, the smell was all I could notice until – BAM! My hair had a whole lotta extra volume.  Naturally curly, my hair had developed a distinct wave and lift.  Delicious smelling and looking hair? Hell yeah!

Add it to your summer beauty bag.  Now.

RRP $21.38.

What is Summer to you?

In Christmas, Everyday, Mag Love, Party time, Sun, Weather, Western Australia on December 7, 2010 at 10:41 am

Here in Perth the skies are a bit overcast and it’s a little bit chilly.  Basically, it’s not summer.  So rather than whinge, I thought I’d create a montage of the things Summer means to me in WA. Feel free to add what Summer means to you below.  T x

How to Get Sexy, Smooth Legs

In Everyday, Legs, Shaving, Soap, Spa, Weather, Women on November 29, 2010 at 6:00 am

Summer’s almost here, in just a manner of days.  That means slapping on more sunscreen and legs on show here, there and everywhere.  Keeping legs hair-free by shaving can be irritating to your skin, unless you have the right shaver for you.

Get smooth legs like Lara's for summer.

Gillette have the best range of shavers on the market (according to moi).  I am loving their Spa Breeze razor ($14.25), with which you don’t need to use a shaving gel – you just run it right over your legs and they’re smooth and moisturised.   Read the rest of this entry »
